From fibre to packaging: a visit to Van Genechten Packaging and Smurfit Westrock in Turnhout
In collaboration with inDUfed, Fost Plus and Valipac, we organised an inspiring visit to Van Genechten Packaging and Smurfit Westrock in Turnhout.
We were given a unique insight into the manufacturing process for both cardboard and corrugated cardboard — two applications which, together, illustrate the versatility and innovative strength of our sector. Van Genechten Packaging showed us how the company produces high-end consumer packaging from cardboard and micro-corrugated board, whilst Smurfit Westrock focuses on robust industrial solutions made from corrugated board.
What caught our attention? The powerful combination of efficiency, design and circularity. From raw material to finished product, we saw how companies are focusing on smart, recyclable packaging that perfectly meets the needs of today and tomorrow.
The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) was, of course, at the heart of the discussions. The message could not have been clearer: it is only by collaborating throughout the supply chain that we will be able to successfully meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the future.
These visits demonstrate in practical terms how our sector is already contributing to a more sustainable packaging supply chain — and is ready to strengthen that role even further.
A big thank you to Van Genechten Packaging and Smurfit Westrock for sharing their expertise.
